Event details

The topic for this year’s MacDiarmid Institute Regional Lecture Series is Good news for a change: Sustainability Tech in Aotearoa New Zealand and the science behind it.

In association with Café Scientifique Tauranga, join us in Tauranga on 21st of August, when Michelle Cook, Calum Gordon and Charlie Ruffman will talk about some of the things happening within the sustainability tech ecosystem, such as exciting new sustainability technology, based on deep science, that’s making its way into the world with clear potential to address some of the challenges we’re facing.

Dr Michelle Cook has been an Energy Materials Scientist at GNS Science since 2021. Michelle’s expertise is in surface modification and characterisation, and her research interests are in low carbon energy applications and energy resilience.

Dr Calum Gordon is a Research Fellow in Chemistry at Victoria University of Wellington, and Co-Chair of the MacDiarmid Emerging Scientists Association (MESA). He studies luminescent nanomaterials for applications such as solar devices and LEDs.

Dr Charlie Ruffman is a Research Fellow in Physics at the University of Auckland. He studies the chemical properties of materials using computer simulations, with the goal of designing new catalysts for fuel production and carbon dioxide removal.

Registration is required. Please register here via Eventbrite.

Not in Tauranga? We're also hosting this event in Hawke's Bay (7 August), Wanaka (11 August), and Nelson (31 August).

Otherwise let us know where you'd like us to visit next!

Editor's note: You can watch a video of this lecture, filmed at the Tauranga event on 21/08/23.
