Event details

How do you go from a Research Lab to a new start-up company? The topic for this year’s MacDiarmid Institute Regional Lecture Series is ‘To Industry and Beyond’, which focuses on pathways from science to industry.

In association with the Nelson Science Society, join us at our second event of the series in Nelson on 3rd November, when Franck Natali and Maryam Shojaei will talk about the way that materials science spins into the hi-tech sector, as well as show careers for science students outside of the traditional university pathways. We will also talk about the role of technology in sustainability and how we are trying to encourage greater participation by young people in science and science-led careers.

Associate Professor Franck Natali is an Investigator with the MacDiarmid Institute and Associate Professor in Physics at Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington. He is also CTO and Founder Director for the start-up company, Liquium, and Innovator Fellow in the inaugural cohort of the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program, founded by Bill Gates in 2021 and dedicated to supporting the development of new clean
technologies to help the world reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Dr Maryam Shojaei is a MacDiarmid Institute alumna, having studied for her PhD at the University of Canterbury under the supervision of Principal Investigator Aaron Marshall, and a MacDiarmid Institute Alumni Business Scholarship recipient. She is currently part of the Three Waters team at the Christchurch City Council.

Not in Nelson? We're also hosting this event in Rotorua (13 October), Tauranga (21 November), and Hawke's Bay (28 November).

Otherwise let us know where you'd like us to visit next!
