Supporting student training and wellbeing

In its 9th year, the MacDiarmid Emerging Scientists Association (MESA) continues to run networking and training for all MacDiarmid Institute students and postdoctoral researchers.
In 2019, the MESA executive was: David Perl (Chair), Tarek Kollmetz (Treasurer), Edoardo Galli (Secretary), Shalini Divya (Social Media Representative) and Nicola Altenhuber, Sam Brooke, Taniela Lolohea, Kira Pitman, and Sriram Sundaresan.
Last year, the committee organised workshops on electrochemistry, writing and graphics. MESA members feed in information that decides the themes and locations of workshops and minimises wasteful travel. In particular, the committee focused on supporting the wellbeing of MESA members, including dedicating the first day of the Future Leaders Programme to host expert speakers to introduce wellbeing from a range of different perspectives.
MESA provided a clear way to engage with the community to build social, academic, and professional development support outside of biology.
