Dr Andreas Markwitz took up the role of Director for Radiation Safety at the Ministry of Health in Wellington in 2018. Prior to then, he was Principal Scientist at GNS Science focussing on nanotechnology research for industry and air pollution science.
A current MBIE funded Vision Matauranga project focusses on working with Whakarewarewa Village Charitable Trust in Rotorua to better understand health effects of hydrogen sulphide.
Andreas has more than 250 publications in the field and has established ion beam analysis, a research tool that uses high energy charged particles to analysis surface chemistry and elemental composition, in New Zealand with his team at GNS.
He pioneered ion implantation technology in New Zealand enabling implantation of any element into the near surface region for doping and materials modification - such as enriching the surface of silicon with Si-28 for quantum computing research.
Work with particle accelerators and radiation have led to new work with GNS in radon mapping in New Zealand (Rmap).
For certain problems, such as molecular simulations and drug design, quantum computing might be a total game-changer.
Dr Andreas Markwitz
