Biography

Kim's background encompasses mathematics, software engineering, physical chemistry, and electrochemistry. He completed a Bachelor and Masters in Computational Modelling at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He then worked in the computer games industry for NaturalMotion, designing artificial intelligence and physical simulation solutions for 3D character animation. Kim completed his PhD in the Electrochemistry & Interfaces Group at the University of Warwick in the UK through the MOAC doctoral training centre in 2013. After post-doc positions at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Utah, he started as an Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin in 2017. In 2020, he moved to Victoria University of Wellington as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences.

Research interests

Kim studies how nanoscale structure affects electrocatalytic reactions. He develops new experimental techniques to make nanoscale electrochemical measurements, characterize the electrocatalytic activity of nanostructured samples, and integrate nanostructure into energy storage and conversion technologies that are needed for the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Driving chemical reaction with electricity enables a zero-carbon economy.
