Co-Directors appointed Fellows of the Royal Society of New Zealand Te Apārangi

MacDiarmid Institute Co-Directors Professor Nicola Gaston and Professor Justin Hodgkiss have both been elected to the New Zealand Royal Society Te Apārangi’s Academy.

Dr Charlie Ruffman

Charlie is a Research Fellow in the Department of Physics at the University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau. He received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Otago in 2021, where he worked on modelling and optimising affordable catalysts for hydrogen production. Charlie was awarded a Rutherford Post-doctoral Fellowship by the Royal Society Te Apārangi in 2021 to investigate new liquid metal catalysts for carbon dioxide reduction. In 2023, he received an independent Marsden Fast-Start Grant to continue his work on liquid metals and determine how their structure can be controlled by the addition of supporting materials.

Dr Joseph Nelson

Joseph Nelson studied for his MSc in Physics at the University of Auckland, working on quantum optics theory in the group of Howard Carmichael. He then moved overseas to the UK, completing his PhD at the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, working on computational crystal structure prediction.

Professor Alex Yip

 Professor Alex Yip received his BE(Hon) in Chemical Engineering from UNSW (Australia) in 2003. He obtained his Ph.D. from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2009), studying heterogeneous catalysis. He was a postdoctoral fellow at UC Berkeley, working on the methanol-to-triptane process via zeolite catalysis. Currently, he is leading the Energy and Environmental Catalysis Group at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.
